Do not be upset by the fancy name of "nucleus solitarius" used to describe this visceral sensory nucleus.
To understand why nucleus solitarius is not simply called the visceral sensory nucleus of 7 look back at Figure 21.
So nucleus solitarius cannot be called the visceral sensory nucleus of 7 when it is shared by CNs 7, 9 and 10.
Nucleus solitarius, unlike the very long somatic sensory nucleus of 5, is a visceral sensory nucleus located solitarily in the medulla in the visceral sensory area.
